Want your pet to enjoy their feed for longer? Find out how to store it right

After carefully selecting a feed for your pet, you'll hope they'll enjoy it for a long time. However, some time after opening the package, you might notice that your four-legged friend's interest in the feed drops. This can be caused by changes in feed quality due to poor storage conditions. How can you suitably store your feed so it'll remain appetizing for your pet for as long as possible?

Store in a cool, dry place

Dry feed producers label their packages with “store in a cool, dry place.” That means that it's best to store pet feed at room temperature and avoid direct sunlight. Feed stored hot or under direct sunlight will go bad sooner because the fat in it will oxidize. This will give the food a bitterness and unpleasant odor.

It's worth emphasizing that garages, cellars or outdoor sheds won't be suitable places to store feed. These are unheated facilities that depend directly on outdoor conditions.

Store in the original packaging

By storing feed in the original packaging, you'll ensure that it won't lose its aroma. The important thing is to close the package correctly so air doesn't get in. The original package also displays plenty of important information – production date and shelf life, batch numbers, producer’s information. All of this will be important if you have any doubts regarding the product's quality.

When storing the feed in a container, it is recommended to choose one made of high-quality plastic, glass or stainless steel. Every time you change the feed in the container, you must clean it with hot water and soap, rinse it well, and dry it. It's key that you pour the new feed into a dry container because the excess moisture may cause the product to go moldy.

When buying feed for your pet, we recommend considering how much is the right amount and not buying too much. The fresher the feed, the tastier it'll be for your pet!
